Hair Loss and Alopecia

When it comes to hair loss (also known as alopecia) you need to see a specialist such as Dr. Steele Johnson and you need to act quickly. At times others may blow off hair loss saying that the issue is insignificant, “not that big of a deal”, or that “you still have a lot of hair”, but at Steele Dermatology we take hair loss seriously. Usually one only notices that their hair is thinned when it reaches about 50% of it’s original density, which is later than anyone would want to take action on any condition. So, when you notice hair loss, come in for evaluation and treatment.

There are many types of alopecia that include inflammation and autoimmune disorders, nutritional and hormonal imbalances, medications, stress, and styling practices. There is no one simple cause of alopecia, so there is no simple generic treatment course. Make an appointment for proper evaluation and examination of your alopecia, then Dr. Steele Johnson will design an appropriate and effective treatment plan for you to restore your hair.

Brittle, Breaking, or Fragile Hair

Dr. Steele Johnson sees many patients experiencing brittle, fragile, dry or breaking hair that could be confused with hair loss/alopecia. While it’s not alopecia per se, the cosmetic implications of poor quality hair can be as significant as that of alopecia. Fortunately, in this scenario, the hair is growing from the scalp perfectly fine, which means that the hair follicles are intact and functional. That alone means that there is a foundation for building healthier, thicker, stronger hair from those follicles.

Brittle or fragile hair is a sign that things aren’t going right with hair growth—either because of internal factors or external damage. In any case, Dr. Steele Johnson is able to evaluate your hair to find the cause of your brittle or thin hair and create a plan to strengthen, lengthen and revitalize your hair.

Eyebrow and Eyelash Hair Loss

Dr. Steele Johnson is experienced in seeing patients with not only hair loss on the scalp, but also hair loss of the eyelashes and eyebrows. These hairs are so prominent on the face and frame the eyes, so they can be very important to one’s appearance if lost. Some of the same factors responsible for scalp hair loss can also affect the lashes and brows—these can be internal factors like nutrition, medication, internal disorders or very commonly, external factors like eyelash extensions or over-plucking.

In any case, Dr. Steele Johnson is one of the few physicians than can help restore your lashes or brows through applied medical treatment or specialized procedural restoration (transplant or PRP (platelet-rich-plasma)) treatment. See Dr. Steele Johnson to see what can be done for your scarce lashes or brows.

Diagnosis & Treatment

At Steele Dermatology, we are dedicated to diagnosing and treating all conditions having to do with the hair on the scalp and body. Whether it is hair loss, thinning hair, or damaged hair, we believe that there must be a comprehensive approach to issues concerning the hair. Your hair concerns will take center stage at Steele Dermatology.

Evaluation and Diagnosis

Any concern with the hair requires careful evaluation with appropriate lab tests or biopsies to find the underlying pathophysiology and cause of the issue. Dr. Steele Johnson’s evaluation will include a physical exam, possible biopsy and blood work. After reviewing the info, a treatment plan will be developed.

Hair Loss Treatments

No two people’s hair loss is the same. There are numerous types of alopecia, some are commonly known and some are more rare. With the various types of alopecia, some treatments may be very appropriate for patient, but not for another. Since most over-the-counter products are made with little consideration of the cause of one’s hair loss, unfortunately they are rarely effective and can leave patients very disappointed. Treatments include oral vitamin supplementation, injections, laser stimulation or hair transplantation or some combination.

Like every part of our bodies, nutrients and build blocks are necessary for proper and healthy development. The hair is no different. The hair requires some of these building blocks more than other cells in the body do. Biotin is perhaps the most popular ingredient in “hair growth” vitamins, but biotin supplementation alone often doesn’t correct hair loss. Other antioxidants, anti-inflammatories and vitamins are helpful as well in combination. Dr. Steele Johnson will recommend the best choices that have data and science demonstrating their efficacy.
For certain types of alopecia where there is inflammation involved, steroid injections are a great treatment option. The injections calm inflammation that is attacking the hair follicles, and therefore once the inflammation is calmed, the hair follicle may function to grow hair.Minoxidil injection is another treatment that may help significantly improve hair growth in the right patient. Since it is injected into the scalp, it may penetrate better than the topical solutions that may be applied. Also, it may be a better choice for those who are unable to tolerate the topical solution due to irritation or interference with styling. Minoxidil works by promoting the growing phase of the hair follicle and increasing blood flow to the follicles.Platelet Rich Plasma injections is a new and exciting treatment for various types of hair loss which uses concentrated nutrients and growth factors from your own blood to promote hair growth. The injections are natural, and derived from your own body and work very well.
Low Level Light Treatment (LLLT) is another technology than can be used to stimulate hair growth in hair follicles. Dr. Steele Johnson can recommend a regimen that may be best suited for you.
Hair transplantation (also known as hair restoration) surgery involves simply moving some of your own hair follicles from one area to another. In most cases of hair loss, thinning only occurs in some areas, while other ares remain very dense. This makes it possible to move hair follicles from the highest density areas to those that are thinning or balding. Dr. Steele Johnson creates natural looking results with the most advanced techniques in hair restoration.Make an appointment with Dr. Steele Johnson today to see if you may be a candidate for surgical, medical or procedural hair restoration. Eyelash and Eyebrow Restoration Treatments

Eyebrow restoration is an extremely gratifying procedure for Dr. Steele Johnson and her patients! There are many situations where one may find themselves with sparse eyebrows—from over-plucking, genetics, or medical issues. In any case, Dr. Steele Johnson can easily restore your lashes with transplantation from an area where you have plenty of hair (like the scalp) to your brows. While taking only a tiny percentage of your scalp hairs that won’t be missed from your head, Dr. Steele Johnson can fully and permanently replenish or augment your brow hair. Make an appointment at Steele Dermatology to see how your can get fuller brows.
Long, thick beautiful lashes make anyone’s eye look more attractive and ways to increase lash length and thickness have become numerous and popular. From mascara to chemical enhancement to lash extensions and false lashes, all can be safe and effective, but all are temporary and require maintenance. If you desire something more permanent, or have lost lashes and it is not possible to grow them, then you may be a great candidate for eyelash transplantation! Like eyebrow transplantation, eyelash transplantation is a form of hair transplantation, but the recipient area is your upper eyelids/lash line. Since the lashline is a smaller recipient area, fewer hairs need to be transplanted overall. For this reason, it is also a very gratifying procedure because you can make a significant impact in the appearance of the eyelashes. Make an appointment with Dr. Steele Johnson to discover how she can expertly give you a permanent natural and beautiful lash line.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Treatment

How does PRP hair restoration workPlatelets are cells in our body that are integral to the natural tissue and wound healing process. They are filled with many growth factors, proteins, and activating substances. Because they are so rich in tissue healing and stimulating factors, when concentrated, they can be used as a potent therapeutic substance in medicine. In fact, concentrated platelet preparations have successfully been used in other areas of medicine for years. More recently, we’ve found that concentrated platelets (i.e. platelet rich plasma (PRP) stimulate hair growth. The growth factors in PRP stimulate the base of the hair follicle where stem cells are located and begin to grow new hair, longer and thicker hair.

The PRP Hair Treatment Process

The process is simple, natural, and non-surgical. A sample of your own blood is taken and the test tube is placed in a centrifuge to allow the separation and isolation of the platelets from everything else. Meanwhile, your scalp is cleaned and numbing cream applied. The PRP is then injected into the areas of hair loss on the scalp and a micro needling device is used to massage the area, stimulate the hair follicles and allow greater penetration of the PRP. The whole process takes less than an hour.

Advanced Technique

Dr. Steele Johnson trained with hair loss expert and hair transplantation surgeon, Dr. Alan Bauman in Boca Raton, Florida to learn this advanced technique and bring it to her patients in the Atlanta area. Previously, there were few to no non-surgical treatments for male and female pattern hair loss that were safe and effective. Dr. Steele Johnson’s expertly delivered PRP hair treatments makes hair re-growth a reality for a whole new group of patients who previously may have been helpless in watching their hair loss progress. Now there’s something we can do.

Are You a Candidate?

To be eligible for the PRP Hair treatment you can:

  • Be Female or Male
  • Be Any Race or Ethnicity
  • Have Thinning Hair

Dr. Steele Johnson will need to evaluate your medical history and do a thorough examination of your scalp to properly diagnose your condition and make sure that your hair follicles are healthy enough to respond to treatment. In cases of male and female pattern hair loss, alopecia areata, telogen effluvium and traction alopecia, the hair follicles are there and can grow hair with stimulation.

How Many PRP Hair Treatments are Required?

The best results are achieved in use with combination with ACell (extracellular matrix) which is added to the PRP. While PRP contains the factors necessary for stimulating hair growth, ACell contains the foundational elements/building blocks for hair follicles and hair composition. The hair growth results are better with this combination and fewer treatments overall are required. You have 1 treatment then a booster session 6 months later. A full session is only required once every 1-2 years after initial treatment. With PRP alone, treatment is given once a month for 3 months then 6 months later.

Are There Other Treatments/Products Required?

Yes. Successfully treating hair loss requires multi layered approach. The proper shampoo, conditioner and daily topical stimulating agents will be recommended as well as the proper nutritional/vitamin support for your new hair.
