What are wrinkles and crepey skin?

Wrinkles are one of the most common signs of aging. Wrinkles are fine lines in the skin, typically from repeated muscle movement of years. Crow’s Feet (fine lines around the eyes when smiling), Eleven’s (vertical lines between the brows when frowning), Lip Lines (vertical lines above the top lip), Bunny Lines (lines on the sides of the nose when smiling), and Forehead Lines (horizontal lines across the forehead) are some of the most common types of wrinkles.

On the other hand, when someone has crepey, thinned, aged skin it tends to be in an entire area, like the neck, lower eyelids, cheeks, etc. The skin tends to have a crinkly appearance and this is more likely in thinner, drier, more sensitive skin types.

What causes wrinkles and crepey skin?

Wrinkles mostly come from repeated muscle movement in combination with volume loss (with age or with very lean body composition). Over time, the more you make certain expressions (smiling, frowning, etc.), the stronger your facial muscles get, and the more you see the muscle definition (lines in between the muscles). This becomes more obvious as you age because the muscles have worked out more AND you start to lose healthy collagen and fat that overlies the muscles when you’re younger.

Crepey skin is almost exclusively due to the aging process and sun damage to the skin. As you lose collagen, fat, and elastic tissues as you age, the skin just gets thin and appears wrinkly and crepey.

Where do you get wrinkles and crepey skin?

Common places you may see wrinkles around the eyes, between the brows, along the sides of the nose, forehead, and neck.

You may see crepey skin on the neck, around the eyes, forehead, cheeks, chest, and many areas of the body like above the knees and elbows.

How do we treat wrinkles and crepey skin?

In younger patients who are starting to see wrinkles, the best options are injectable toxins to minimize muscle movement and prevent further progression, combined with microneedling or laser treatments (laser skin toning – laser genesis, Thermi smooth or ultherapy) to slow collagen loss and improve skin quality. As you get older and the skin thins out, wrinkles get deeper and the skin gets more crepey, you’ll need something more aggressive like CO2 laser resurfacing, Ultherapy, and injectable fillers in addition to the procedures mentioned above for maintenance.

Thermi Smooth Face

Thermi Smooth

ThermiSmooth is a non-invasive radiofrequency based treatment that smooths and tightens skin on the face and body. Over the course of several treatments, the skin becomes tighter and smoother as you develop new collagen and elastic tissues. Treatments are delivered anywhere from a few days to a few weeks apart for the best results.

Ultherapy

Ultherapy

Ultherapy is an in-office procedure FDA approved to lift and tighten the skin. It uses ultrasound energy to stimulate the tissues to make new collagen and importantly, elastic tissue to lift and tighten, especially along the jawline, cheeks, chest, or areas of the body. The treatment creates natural and long-lasting significant improvements because it causes your body to make its own collagen and elastic tissue.

Microneedling

Microneedling

Microneedling is an office procedure where tiny needles puncture the skin in a repeated and controlled manner. The needles spark the natural healing process in the skin, to make new fresh skin, repair damaged skin, and smooth skin texture. Numbing is required prior to the procedure to ensure proper depth of penetration is achieved for maximum results.

Dermal fillers

Dermal Fillers

Injectable fillers are used to add volume to areas of the skin where it is lacking. They can be added where fat, collagen or even bone has been lost or where you want to augment your appearance like to sharpen a jawline, to improve chin projection, to lift your cheeks or shape your nose. Today’s fillers are usually hyaluronic acids, but can be also be collagen, calcium hydroxyapatite or your own fat.

Cosmetic Toxin Injectables

Cosmetic Toxin Injectables

Injectable toxins are better known as Botox or Dysport. They are injected into areas where lines, wrinkles, or folds are created from movement. Besides just eliminating lines, we can lift the brow, smooth the forehead, or turn the frown upside down with Botox or Dysport.
