What is double chin?

The chin is a big area of concern for many people. Whether it’s a little pudgy, loose or if you have a full-on fat chin, it can look worse at certain angles or show up in pictures. It may make you appear larger or older than you are from headshots. The chin/neck is a place where some people hold fat preferentially, just like some people hold fat in their belly, hips, or thighs. Since it’s such a localized area, if you treat it, it typically makes a huge difference in the way that you look and feel.

To learn which double chin treatment may be right for you, schedule an appointment with Steele Dermatology online or give us a call at (770) 464-6000.

What causes double chin?

While some with double chins may have a weight problem everywhere, sometimes that is not the case. It tends to be more of a genetic/hereditary factor, i.e. it’s where you collect or hold fat. When your chin becomes loose or pudgy over time, that may just be the way that you age.

Where do you get double chin?

The little area right under the chin that may just be a small pocket, or may extend back and down the neck and to the sides, along the jawline. Again, you may also just not have a sharp jawline and want to improve that. Often, fat or loose skin can extend down into the neck area as well.

How do we treat double chin?

We treat the issue that you have  – if it’s excess fat, then we will remove or freeze the fat, if it is loose skin, then we will do a tightening treatment, if it is falling skin, then we will lift it.

CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting is the safest and most reliable non-invasive way to remove fat cells from the chin. An applicator is placed over the fat bulge(s) to be treated and the bulge is suctioned into the applicator, the area is cooled to the point of freezing the fat cells while the skin and other tissues are protected. The fat cells are irreversibly damaged and over the next 4-8 weeks, they get permanently flushed out of the system.

Precision Liposuction

Precision Liposuction

Precision liposuction is a form of tumescent liposuction, which is the safest way to achieve immediate and permanent fat removal. In tumescent liposuction, the numbing solution is actually infused under the skin prior to suctioning, so there is no need to be “put under” and undergo general anesthesia. Specifically, with precision liposuction, the smallest possible canulas/tubes are used for suctioning out the fat to allow for precise fat removal as well as body sculpting.

Thermi Tight

Thermi Tight

ThermiTight is a minimally invasive radiofrequency based treatment specifically designed to tighten loose skin on the neck. Since it is invasive, the energy goes under the skin to get to the critical layers needed to tighten. The area is numbed with a numbing solution that is infused first then the ThermiTight probe is passed under the skin. It may be coupled with liposuction if there is also fat underlying the loose skin.

Ultherapy

Ultherapy

Ultherapy is an in-office procedure FDA approved to lift and tighten the skin. It uses ultrasound energy to stimulate the tissues to make new collagen and importantly, elastic tissue to lift and tighten, especially along the jawline and neck. The treatment creates natural and long-lasting significant improvements because it causes your body to make it’s own collagen and elastic tissue – especially to treat wrinkles and lines on the chest.

Kybella

Kybella

Kybella is a solution that can be injected into the chin area to dissolve excess fat cells. The solution consists of an enzyme that breaks down fat cells. The solution is FDA approved for the area under the chin, but a few other areas can be treated in an off-label manner. Several treatments are generally necessary and there is a period of inflammation and swelling that follows treatment.
